Create the Ultimate Self-Care Sunday Routine

November 30, 2022

When was the last time you spent time or money on yourself? Odds are, you could use a breather to foster peace of mind.

Sound hokey? It’s not. Some of the busiest, most powerful women in the world make time for self-care on a regular basis, including the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Anniston, and Serena Wiliams.

This blog post is dedicated to providing hard-working, successful women like yourself with all of the ideas and tools you need for the perfect self-care Sunday. Even if you don’t think you can swing it, we fully know and believe that you deserve it!

What is Self-Care Sunday?

Obviously, self-care is always an option whenever you need it; however, devoting a specific day to nourishing your body, mind, and soul makes you more likely to stick with your “me time” plans. If that mile-long to-do list has been addressed throughout the week with the goal of carving out time for rest and relaxation on Sunday, you’ll be sure to enjoy some time doing the things you love.

Sunday is the perfect day to indulge in your favorite self-care practices because you’ll feel more energized and refreshed as the work week begins anew on Monday. You will always feel more capable and competent running on a full tank than running on fumes!

Why Does a “Rest Day” Matter?

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s all too easy to get caught up in the rat race of perfection and success—whether at work, at home, or within relationships. It’s understandable that you want to give 100% to everything you do, but balance is so important for ensuring that life feels manageable, and for keeping stress at bay.

Think about it: when top athletes train, they are forced to incorporate rest days into their week to promote rest and recovery. Recovery periods aid in long-term growth.

In this way, you are no different than a top athlete. Your mind and body need a recovery period so you can perform effectively the rest of the time! Ultimately, a bit of Sunday self-care is just what the doctor ordered.

How to Set Up a Self-Care Routine

Your perfect self-care Sunday ideas will come from what you love, what you find interesting, and how you unwind. Since self-care doesn’t exclusively fall into the category of physical care, but instead includes emotional, mental, and spiritual categories, don’t feel like you have to lounge in a spa all day long (unless you want to)!

We recommend that you begin by drafting a list of things that you’d do for fun, stimulation, or relaxation for quick and easy self-care ideas. There are probably several things you’ve been wanting to do on any given weekend, but somehow, those activities always get pushed to the backburner. We’ve got news for you: Sunday is your day to make those things a priority!

If the list you create is long, you might consider varying your Sunday routine each week to accommodate different moods and needs. Maybe you’ll feel more like reading on a picnic blanket in the park one weekend, and more like hiking another! The point is that you get your fix of “me time” before the weekend ends, and you make it a point each week to honor that time.

Top Self-Care Sunday Ideas

If you need a good starting place as you brainstorm ideas for self-care, we have a few suggestions for you!

1. Catch Up on Z’s

Statistics suggest that the average person gets less than 7 hours of sleep per night, but the Sleep Foundation recommends 7-9 hours for healthy adults. Sound like you? We’re not blaming you one bit—but we do encourage you to rest a bit more, if possible.

If you find yourself always tired, give yourself the precious gift of sleep on a Sunday morning. You might think you can skimp on it, but the reality is that good immune health, mental health, and more rest squarely on the shoulders of a good night’s sleep.

2. Spend Time in Nature

There’s something about a walk in the woods or a good, long hike that just clears the mind. If you find yourself captivated by what nature has to offer, make it a point this Sunday to spend some time soaking it up!

Perhaps you appreciate nature, but aren’t really the “outdoorsy” type. Even a simple walk in your local park could have significant effects on your state of mind. Some research even shows that as little as 10 minutes per day outside could be beneficial.

3. Try a New Class

If you’re someone who enjoys learning a skill, or experiencing something new, taking a class is a great way to practice mental self-care. Whether it’s a fitness class, cooking class, ceramics class, or anything else under the sun, the point is that you’re engaging in a fun activity that interests you. Plus, a one-time class could become a life-long passion—you never know!

4. Pray, Meditate, or Unplug

Regardless of your background or beliefs, you don’t need to belong to any specific religion to practice spiritual self-care. You might frequent the front pew of your church, or you might be much more inclined to meditate. Alternatively, you might prefer taking a long drive through the countryside to connect back to yourself and to nature.

However you practice it, spiritual self-care is important for accessing reflection, introspection, and peace, all of which are critical to maintaining a sense of calm when you’re rushing around during a busy week.

5. Take a Day Trip

Sometimes, the best remedy to burnout is a change of scenery. A day trip to another town, or even the nearest city, will do the trick! Spend some time getting lost on back roads, wandering in and out of bookstores (if that’s your thing), and stopping for a good cappuccino in a tucked-way cafe. Sound like pampering yet? We think so!

6. Schedule a Spa Day

If massages, facials, and body wraps sound like your cup of tea, schedule a spa day for some much-needed relaxation and physical self-care. Get the knots out, the whiteheads cleared, and your peace of mind restored.

The only drawback to regular spa trips is, unfortunately, the hefty price tag. Spa services tend to be expensive, so if weekly spa trips aren’t financially feasible, we’ve got another self-care idea for you!

7. Self-Care at Home

Why not bring the spa to you? The luxuries of the spa feel that much better at home, and are periodic investments rather than weekly splurges that feel unaffordable.

By starting with a few simple items, such as bath products, all-natural shower sprays and bath bombs, and body oil, you’ll quickly develop a coveted stash of self-care accessories that you’ll reach for every Sunday (or even every night of the week)!
