Four reviews, three different products, five and a half years apart, saying the same sentence. One is titled "Wife pleaser" and another "Wife is over the moon." Of those 25 reviews, 21 are five-star, one is four-star, one is three-star and two are two-star — and we quote the unhappy ones further down rather than leaving them out.

The longer ones are more useful. Bob White: "My wife had been wanting something just like the full body bath pillow. She loves it and it was definitely a win for me." Mark Leonard: "My wife is very happy with her gift. The quality is first rate, and she was able to take a bath comfortably." And Rodney E Sprouse, on the tray: "my wife absolutely loves it. The only draw back is that instead of her usual 1 hour baths because of the caddy she now takes 3-4 hour baths.....lol"

The pick with the most evidence: the tray, at $68.95

The option with the most evidence behind it is not the most expensive one. The Bamboo Bathtub Tray is $68.95 and carries 169 reviews at 4.73 stars, which is both more reviews and a higher average than anything else in this guide.

It adjusts between 29.4 and 41.3 inches, and carries a stainless book stand, a wine slot, a slatted soap dish and a phone sleeve. D. Shaw, who had the tub most people worry about: "I wasn't sure it would work with my bathtub because there isn't much space on one side before the wall, but it fits fine and feels sturdy. I don't worry about it slipping into the water." Mark J. LaCour: "perfect for unwinding in the tub - and it holds the wine glass very well."

Two caveats, both from reviewers. It rests on the rim rather than clamping to it: Renee Wells, whose standalone tub has about an inch of rim each side, reported the tray "moves around a lot." And the book stand is modest. Susan McCarthy: "the cloth bookrest/wire is a bit short & doesn't look the sturdiest. I would be careful with large books." If she reads hardbacks in the bath, know that going in. Seven reviews across the range describe an item arriving damaged or splintered, five of them on the tray listings and two on the pair, which is worth knowing if you are ordering close to the date.

The two-piece option: tray and pillow together

The Bath Tray and Bath Pillow is $113.90 for both pieces and has 53 reviews at 4.38 stars — more money, fewer reviews and a lower average than the tray alone, which is the honest trade. One thing to be clear about, because our own listings make it easy to confuse: the pillow in this set is the head, neck and shoulder pillow with seven suction cups. It is not the same product as the $68.90 Full Body Bath Pillow further down, which is a separate, full-length mat. Seven of the 25 wife-mentions in our file sit on this listing: six are positive, one is a two-star report of a failure. Dustin: "Both items work great, my wife really loves them. Easy to set up or move if needed." John Breitenbach: "The bath tray fits my wife's needs. She is enjoying the use of the tray and pillow."

The pillow is the weaker half, and the set's own reviews say so. Four of the 53 report the pillow slipping or the suction failing. Brian, four stars: "The tray is nice. Feels a little unstable but manageable. The pillow doesnt stick to the tub and doesnt stay up as expected." Rebecca Caiafa: "pillow cheaply made and suction doesn't stick very well. I threw the pillow away." Alex Surdez, two stars, bought it as a Christmas gift for his wife and reported the pillow slid and the tray broke at a glue joint under a full 32 oz tumbler.

The separate $68.90 full-length bath mat sold on its own has far more data on it: 151 reviews averaging 4.47 stars, of which 25 report the suction cups failing to hold, roughly one in six. Seven describe the fabric as scratchy or itchy, several adding that it softened after a wash or two. Different product, same recurring complaint, which is the part worth carrying across: on both pillows, suction is what people come back to grumble about.

Plenty of reviewers report the opposite. Donna Karolak, on the full-length mat: "If you have a freestanding tub this body pillow is a must! Strong suction cups so that it stays in place." Erin Belka: "Super comfortable, great suction, dried fast." Cooper34 describes the method the satisfied reviewers keep repeating: "take just a couple of moments positioning where you want the head pillow part to be and then ensure ALL the suction cups are pressed down firm." We would like to tell you which tubs it works on, and we cannot: only 3 of those 25 complaints mention the shape of their tub at all, and the ones that do disagree with each other. Anyone claiming a clean rule here is guessing.

So the honest version: the tray is the better-evidenced half, with a higher rating over three times as many reviews as the set, and a pillow is the part people complain about on both listings. Neither is flawless — the tray has its own fit and damage reports above. If she would like the pillow and you will take that chance, the pair is $44.95 more than the tray alone. If you would rather not gamble on a gift, buy the $68.95 tray and put the difference toward the evening.

Birthday gift ideas for your wife

This is the occasion this page gets asked about most, so here it is in the shapes people ask for.

If you want something romantic without it being corny. The rose-led $86.75 box is the romantic register without a single heart on it — a candle, a bath bomb, salts, soap and a body oil, all in the same scent family. If you want it to be a surprise. One thing worth knowing before you plan a surprise: in a 2011 paper in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, Francesca Gino and Frank Flynn ran five studies in which recipients reported appreciating gifts they had explicitly asked for more than unsolicited ones, while givers expected the two to be appreciated about equally — the abstract is here. What follows is our editorial advice, not something our reviewers told us. They wrote about products, fit and comfort. The evening is the part we think matters, and you can disagree with it for free.

1. Tell her a week ahead. Three lines on paper: you have blocked Friday, she does not need to plan anything.
2. Take whatever she normally handles. Whatever that is in your house.
3. Set it up before you tell her. Run the bath, light the candle, lay the tray, put her book on the stand and her phone in the sleeve.
4. Then go away. The gift is the hour, not the company.

There is consumer research pointing the same direction, though none of it tested a bath or a bath tray. Leaf Van Boven and Thomas Gilovich, in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology in 2003, reported that people said experiential purchases had made them happier than material ones. Cindy Chan and Cassie Mogilner looked specifically at gifts and found, in experiments on real gift exchanges, that recipients of experiential gifts reported more improvement in the relationship than recipients of material ones. Neither study says anything about our products. Both are a reason to spend some of your effort on the evening rather than all of it on the object.

What to check before you order

• Measure the tub. The tray adjusts between 29.4 and 41.3 inches. Richard Rappaport still found it "a bit too narrow to span our large garden tub even at its maximum width," and Kathryn Miller could not fit it between the wall and a glass shower enclosure.
• Decide how you feel about the pillows' suction. 25 of the standalone Full Body Bath Pillow's 151 reviews report the cups failing, as do 4 of the 53 on the $113.90 set, and neither set of reviews reveals a pattern we can pass on. Cooper34's method — position it, then press every cup down firmly before the water is in — is what the satisfied reviewers describe. If you would rather not risk it, buy the tray.
• Order early. Ten reviews across the range describe a late or undelivered order, and seven describe an item arriving damaged. Neither is common against 382 reviews, but both are worse when the gift has a date on it.
• Check the return terms. Return shipping is paid by the customer; three reviewers raised it, two of them because the cost was high on a bulky item.
• Skip the gift that is really for the house. If the household uses it, it is not hers.
